APP Challenges Local Community to Honor Their Commitment to Preserve High Conservation Value Forest

Mongabay.com – (March 26, 2014)

Mongabay.com recently published an article entitled, “Community's push to clear forest for plantation challenges efforts to conserve in Indonesia,” discussing Asia Pulp & Paper’s (APP) negotiations with a community group led by Hasan Basri in the Sumatra Riau Province. APP is challenging Basri’s group to stop deforestation on high conservation value (HCV) land in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Basri, however, is evoking his ancestral right to 700 hectares of peat forest, also within the 35,000 hectare concession managed by APP, with the intent to clear the forest for plantation. Such destruction would breach APP’s commitment of zero deforestation outlined in their Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) which launched on February 5, 2013.

APP is in the process of negotiating with Basri to exchange his plans of demolishing the area under APP’s management with non-HCV land.
