Clean Manufacturing innovation helps save energy used in production of pulp and paper

Jakarta, 28 December 2016 – Pindo Deli Pulp and Paper Mills, a business unit of Asia Pulp and Paper Group (APP), is introducing a further innovation to save energy and natural resources in its production process. In collaboration with the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative, Pindo Deli is incorporating the new Clean Manufacturing Program (CMP) into the production of all its paper, tissue and packaging products.

The Clean Manufacturing Program emphasizes the need for greater energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reductions, as part of APP's commitment to the Roadmap Vision 2020. The program also supports the Indonesian Government's Nationally Determined Contribution, which includes an unconditional greenhouse gas emissions reduction target of 29% by 2030.

APP began to implement CMP in the fourth quarter of 2016 and the process will continue for the next 12 months. The main objective is to identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and to implement measures to achieve optimal savings in energy use and carbon emissions over the short and long term.

APP Managing Director for Sustainability, Aida Greenbury, said: “At COP22 in Marrakech this year, industry players were working hand-in-hand with NGOs, academics and governments to implement the Paris Agreement to work together to reduce GHG emissions, to support clean energy and implement circular economy."

The CMP is expected to reduce Pindo Deli’s energy requirement by at least 5% in the first year and incrementally more in the coming years. “At APP, we are not only making efforts to reduce GHG emission through the implementation of our Forest Conservation Policy which aims to protect the natural forests and peatland in our supply chain, but we are also working hard to achieve our target through Clean Manufacturing Programs in our mills. We are proud to collaborate with IDH Sustainability Trade Initiative for Pulp & Paper on this journey and we will ensure the smooth knowledge transfer to the rest of our operations" Ms. Greenbury added.

APP is supported by the IDH Sustainable Trade Initiative in the implementation of the Clean Manufacturing Program as part of its broader pulp and paper initiative (STIPP – Sustainable Trade Initiative on Pulp and Paper), which aims to eliminate deforestation from commodity supply chains and facilitate collaboration between businesses, government and other partners to improve the sustainability of business operations. IDH Indonesia Director, Fitrian Ardiansyah, said:“Pindo Deli's innovation shows that APP is committed to establishing sustainable business practices across its entire supply chain. We hope this innovation can be easily replicated as the energy saved from the production process is in line with the aim to create environmentally friendly timber supplies, and feeds into the overall ambition to create a sustainable pulp and paper industry in Indonesia.”
