Independent Study Reveals APP is on Target with Zero Deforestation Goals

Atlanta, GA – (September 8, 2014)

An independent study confirms Asia Pulp & Paper Group (APP) has sufficient means to maintain its zero deforestation commitment as outlined in their Forest Conservation Policy (FCP) released in February 2013.

The Forest Trust independently conducted a “Growth and Yield” study, which assessed existing plantation areas to ensure APP and its suppliers have sufficient capacity to meet the new policy.

"We are pleased to be able to reassure everyone that APP and its suppliers have sufficient resource for the company's 100 percent plantation target," said Scott Poynton, executive director of TFT. “We have identified one minor gap in 2020 but this can be easily filled by increasing the productivity of the plantation operations between now and then.”

The Rainforest Alliance will be reviewing the methodology and conclusions of the report. They have agreed to conduct an external evaluation of APP’s progress in implementing the commitments in the FCP through an independent audit.

Additionally, APP has announced a new procedure mandating that all future suppliers and purchases maintain compliance with the FCP. Earlier this year, APP also expanded upon its zero deforestation commitment to develop a plan to restore and support the conservation of one million hectares of rainforest across Indonesia. This new commitment will have a significant impact on the landscapes both in and around the plantation concessions in APP’s supply chain.
